Ian Jansma

The spirit of exploration and love of nature came early to Ian while growing up in the Green Mountains of Vermont. After earning his degree in Philosophy from Bard College in upstate New York, he made the cross-continental move to Kodiak Island, Alaska. Surrounded by unspoiled landscapes and legendary wildlife, Ian found his calling as a wilderness guide and campaigner for the environment.

Ian's long career in adventure tourism and conservation research eventually culminated in expedition cruising, which has taken him to our planet's most remote, wild and exotic regions. As an all-around naturalist and guide, Ian is ready to reveal all aspects of the natural world. His areas of deepest expertise are in birds and marine mammals worldwide, from the high latitudes to the tropics. He is also eager to discuss his travels to hundreds of national parks, wildlife preserves and spectacular natural landmarks on all seven continents.

Having embraced an itinerant lifestyle for the better part of two decades, Ian has recently adopted a more settled life in Tasmania, Australia. Still not immune to the call of the wild, he feels at home anywhere nature is still in control. Whether he is botanizing in the High Arctic, birding in the Indo-Pacific, or kayaking with whales in Antarctica, Ian loves to create and share amazing experiences in nature with fellow explorers.
