Lennox Honeychurch

Lennox Honychurch was born on the island of Dominica and is a Barbadian citizen by descent. He attended The Lodge School, Barbados, and is a graduate of St. Hugh’s College, University of Oxford UK, with a doctorate and master’s degree in anthropology. His academic focus has been the indigenous Kalinago people of the Eastern Caribbean and their contact and cultural exchange with later West African and European arrivals.

 

His most recent books deal with these themes: ‘In the Forests of Freedom – The fighting Maroons of Dominica’ and ‘Resistance Refuge Revival -The Indigenous Kalinagos of Dominica’. Other publications include ‘The Dominica Story – A history of the island’ and a three-part series of history textbooks, ‘The Caribbean People’ used in high schools across the region. He is also an artist who has illustrated most of his own books.

 

He is interested in the restoration of historic Caribbean architecture, with his most recent project being the restoration of Fort Shirley, an 18th century military garrison, at the Cabrits National Park, Dominica. He served as a senator in the Dominica House of Assembly and was one of the delegates who negotiated for the island’s independence from Britain in 1978. He also served as staff tutor with the University of the West Indies Open Campus and was awarded an honorary doctorate by the university.
