Today, we braved the elements and came out the other side triumphantly. All day, we encountered strong winds and an occasional downpour. But thankfully, we were able to visit and enjoy the delightful Isle of Iona.
After sailing from Oban, we sailed past an imposing lighthouse and a few moments later Duart Castle, the home of the MacLeans, rising starkly through the rain and low cloud. After the bus ride, we boarded the ferry to Iona, where our wonderful guide Jana met us. She led us to The Nunnery, then past a high cross, a graveyard of kings and religious figures, and finally to the impressive Abbey, cloister, and museum.
We were captivated by the centuries of remarkable history we learned about here, which has had a profound impact on many places around the world. It all started with Saint Columba when he arrived here in the year 563 A.D. Afterwards, we were able to enjoy time to ourselves and visit the lovely shops.
On our return to the ship, we visited Duart Castle and learned about the history of the MacLean family.
