Haida Gwaii, 9/10/2024, National Geographic Sea Bird
Aboard the
National Geographic Sea Bird
Alaska
National Geographic Sea Bird visited Haida Gwaii today. In the morning, we visited a Museum and Cultural Center where we learned about the house frontal poles and other utilitarian and creative objects.
In the afternoon, there were a variety of hikes on offer in the forest near Spirit Lake. Everyone was very touched by the beautiful surroundings and culture on our first day in this special place.
I like to remind people that there are very few big surprises left in life, but if you are out in nature, with an open mind and a lot of time, you never know what you will find.

Our last and final full day aboard National Geographic Sea Bird saw us Zodiac cruising and kayaking amongst the Desolation Sound, Marine Provencial Park. The morning was chilly, but as breakfast was being enjoyed, the skies began to clear and show a beautiful blue-sky day. Kayaking brought guests up close to the coast to explore the intertidal zone. There were some beautiful ochre sea stars above the low tide mark, harbor seals basking in the sun, and some of the best landscape views of the entire trip. After our activities, we got underway to head towards Vancouver. Mother Nature wanted us to have a few more memorable moments as humpback whales showed surface behavior and slowed our speed to take in all the grandeur.
The final day of our Alaska expedition was spent exploring the beautiful Misty Fjords National Monument Wilderness Area. These stunning fjords provided a perfect landscape to experience the water by both kayak and Zodiac today.
Last night the skies cleared as night fell, and we were treated to the soft blush of the aurora borealis on the northern horizon. By morning we found ourselves in Petersburg, Alaska, “the town that fish built”. It was a soft Alaska morning into which we had many options for exploration; different walks in the forest, boat tours around the harbor, an exploratory bike tour, and a chance to visit town at our own pace. In a light drizzle, it was an opportunity to test our raingear as we embraced the Scandinavian saying; “there is no bad weather, only bad clothing”. By late afternoon all were aboard and cozily settled in the lounge as we transited the dramatic channel of the Wrangell Narrows, heading south towards Canada but with one more day to explore the wilds of Southeast Alaska.
