The National Geographic Sea Bird woke up nestled in Haines, Alaska, as orcas patrolled the near shore waters and the early morning clouds began departing from the Chilkat Mountains. Our early start meant guests were able to enjoy a fine cup of coffee at a local café before being taken through the ages at the Hammer Museum that hosts nearly 7,000 hammers dating back nearly 2,000 years.

After a morning relaxing and perusing local shops, guests were treated to a magnificent afternoon of adventure. We visited the Tlingit village of Klukwan for some local culture and fishing before we floated down the Chilkat River while brown bears and eagles watched nearby.

One of the highlights of the afternoon was flightseeing over incredible blue glaciers and getting a bird’s-eye view of local wildlife foraging.

Our perfect day exploring Haines was capped off with a tasty drink at a local brewery and distillery before going to see stellar sea lions hauled out on the local rocks.
