Today was our last day in Belize and we visited one of the best hidden treasures of this gorgeous Central American country, the Half Moon Caye natural monument. The motto of this protected areas is, “It all started with the Boobies” because it was first designated as a bird sanctuary in 1924 for the protection of the red-footed booby. It became the first marine protected area in Central America and the oldest Belize wildlife protected site.
This is one of the best snorkeling sites we visit and often guests describe it as going into a fish tank. Today among the many kinds of fish we got to see, we also experienced being in the water with black-tipped reef sharks. We also walked to a viewing platform where we observed the famous red-footed boobies nesting, and the magnificent frigatebirds displaying their red, big gular pouch.
