The day began in a special locale known as the Inian Islands. This is a favorite spot for our natural history staff because it is the northernmost point where the Gulf of Alaska enters the Inside Passage of Southeast Alaska, making it essentially a conveyer belt of food for any creatures clever enough to wait for the tide to change in their fortunate direction.

Taking off in expedition landing craft, we were greeted with a view of the Saint Elias Mountains, also known as the Fairweather Mountain range, which is the tallest coastal mountain range on our planet, while sea lions, humpback whales and sea otters took advantage of the influx of fish attempting to swim the gauntlet.

In the afternoon we set off towards George Island for a view of the historical gun left over from World War II, and enjoyed a hunt amongst the dense understory of the temperate rain forest.
