This morning the tenders of Sea Cloud II took us to the island that the Venetians called Curzola and now has the name of Korcula — famous for being the possible birthplace of traveler Marco Polo. The main town has a Venetian ambience, and it’s shaped like a fishbone to protect citizens from strong winds. We walked the maze of small lanes, visited the cathedral in St. Mark’s Square and the site of a religious confraternity, and then enjoyed a beautiful painting by famous Venetian Titian. Later we had the privilege to watch a performance that few visitors can see: the traditional sword dance called “Moreska.”
Back on the ship we savored a great buffet lunch, which included one of our chef’s specialties, the “Pasta Wheel” (spaghetti prepared inside a huge parmesan cheese wheel). In the afternoon the god of winds favored us, and our Captain sent the crew aloft, opening the sails to the wind for a delightful afternoon under sail.
