Today we find ourselves in the heart of South Georgia, both literally and figuratively. Cumberland East Bay is a great opening in the central northeastern facing shore, looking south toward the ridged spine of this long thin island, the Allardyce Range. It provided natural harbors for the general exploration of the island, and it was the primary home for human exploitation of the rich marine environment, primarily the massive whaling efforts of the 20th century.
