We had a sobering day today, with grey skies to match the somber theme. Today marks sixteen years since the September 11 attacks in the US, and we began our day with a moment of silence to remember those who were lost, and the bravery of those women and men who went fearlessly to the aid of victims. Our own journey also commemorated acts of heroism and ultimate sacrifice, as we visited the D-Day sites in Normandy and World War II memorials. We reflected on the scale of human loss at the American Cemetery and Memorial, and wondered at what would have gone through the minds and hearts of the servicemen as they landed on the Normandy beaches. It was a day of contemplation, and of thankfulness for all that we have today thanks to the sacrifices of those who came before us.
