National Geographic Delfina anchored off the shores of Sullivan Bay early in the morning as the sun began to rise over the horizon. We made a dry landing on the black lava after stopping along the way to see Galapagos penguins, a charismatic species that is unique to this island. We were excited to explore the area which has been shaped by the island's frequent volcanic eruptions, resulting in large stretches of jagged lava flows and unique geological formations.

After a short but scenic cruise, we arrived at Bartolomé Island, one of the most photographed islands in the Galápagos. A hike up to the summit was on the afternoon agenda and the trail to the top offered panoramic views of the surrounding islands.
