Tracy Arm and South Sawyer Glacier, 8/25/2021, National Geographic Quest
- Aboard the National Geographic Quest
- Alaska
Clouds created an artistic morning as we cruised from Stephens Passage into the emerald waters of Holkham Bay, and then further into Tracy Arm. The steep sides of the fjord are home to mountain goats, capable of moving along seemingly impossible terrain. Guests switched between sightseeing and attending talks on salmon and plankton. We stopped temporarily to collect and observe actual plankton. Copepods zipped across our screen. In the afternoon, Zodiac trips to the glacier gave us views of calving and splashes, along with the loud grumble of the ice cracking. We collected smaller pieces of ice, which could be centuries old. These allowed for some fun photography.
