We started the morning with an optional stretch class and a wonderful breakfast. We spent the morning anchored in front of Sawyer Glacier among floating ice chunks with our sister ship, National Geographic Sea Lion, nearby. Three forest rangers paid us a visit to tell us about their roles and answer questions about the area.
We took Zodiacs close to the face of the glacier and saw many waterfalls, harbor seals with pups, and even a few mountain goats along the way. We returned to National Geographic Sea Bird for lunch and to warm up. We then had the choice to either kayak through the ice or take a Zodiac cruise to South Sawyer Glacier. The Global Explorers got the chance to learn how to drive the Zodiacs and showed off their skills around the ship.
After our last excursion, we had the chance to do a polar plunge. A few daring people braved the cold water and were rewarded with cheers and applause from the rest of the group watching from the bridge. Our last evening was spent reflecting on all the beauty and fun we’ve had with a slide show made up of everyone’s favorite photos.
