Barro Colorado Island and the Smithsonian Tropical Institution (STRI) have a symbiotic relationship with the Panama Canal and the town of Gamboa. This relationship has endured for almost 100 years since the island was set aside as a nature reserve in 1923. The island is an important spot for tropical biologists. Today we had the opportunity to visit both the town and the island.

Coiba Island National Park
This morning, we ventured to the stunning Coco Island for an unforgettable snorkeling adventure. The crystal-clear waters revealed an underwater paradise teeming with life. We observed vibrant damselfish, parrotfish, and graceful moray eels. Among the highlights were the elusive whitetip reef sharks and the majestic hawksbill turtles, a truly remarkable sight. Some guests opted for a walk at the ranger station, where they enjoyed the island's abundant birdlife. After a delicious lunch onboard, we returned to the ranger station on Coiba's main island. The afternoon was spent kayaking and standup paddleboarding in the serene, pristine waters. The beauty of this unspoiled paradise left everyone in awe as we glided through calm seas surrounded by lush tropical landscapes. It was an incredible day of exploration and connection with nature, a perfect example of the wonders Coiba Island has to offer.
