Today was our first day of operations and our first morning in Greenland. We started the day with an introduction to the staff and listened to more important information. Next up on the schedule was a sporty Zodiac cruise around Nipisat Island. Nipisat is one of three UNESCO Heritage Sites in Greenland and was the home to Saqqaq culture, which inhabited Greenland between 2500 BCE and 800 BCE.
In the afternoon we entered Sisimiut. It is the second largest community in Greenland, and it is believed to have been a settlement site for more than 4,500 years. Sisimiut has a beautiful openair museum that consist of buildings from the colonial period.
Greenland is known for their sled dogs and so is Sisimiut. A small part of Sisimiut is even called Dog Town, where you can see hundreds of sled dogs and pups running around.
One of the options was to explore the Arctic Trail Walk which is a trail that stretches from Kangerlussuaq to Sisimiut. Our guests undertook around 5.4 miles, however the trail stretches over 160 km and would take approximately eight days to hike.
