When I stepped outside, the moon was a sliver over the outline of Bartholomew Island, with its iconic Pinnacle Rock silhouetted against a lightening sky. An early walk over black, new (1897) lava allowed the low light to accentuate the ripples in the pahoehoe lava. Slabs had been tilted during the cooling, creating an uneven surface. Intriguing patterns kept all of us on our toes.
Late morning snorkeling off the white beach of Sullivan Bay added numerous new species to our list, and afternoon snorkeling added even more. Grand finale? Reaching the top of Bartholomew for the breathtaking view over Santiago Island, with deep blue waters mixing with turquoise along the shorelines.
