From a stunning solar eclipse in Baja California to a close-up of a purple-throated cotinga in the Amazon and an adventurous Adélie penguin in Antarctica, these are some of the best photos from the past year.

As the National Geographic Resolution came to Reine, excitement buzzed among the guests who were eager to explore the picturesque fishing village. With its colorful red wooden houses nestled amidst towering mountains, Reine seemed like a painting come to life. The purple-throated cotinga is one of the most spectacular birds of the Amazon. Its vibrant coloration is amazing. Today, I snapped the very best photo I have ever taken of this little jewel that is usually seen at the top of very high trees. One was spotted in a low bush near our boat.
