James Hyde

James Hyde is an Expedition Leader whose work emphasizes environmentally low-impact travel and culturally respectful exploration. Born in the Pacific Northwest, he grew up on Vashon Island in the Salish Sea region, with early experiences shaped by coastal landscapes and marine environments.

A curious traveler from a young age, James explored four continents before earning his degree through Western Washington University’s Huxley College of the Environment. A formative visit to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef sparked a lasting interest in marine ecosystems and the stories they hold beneath the surface.

This interest led him into the world of scuba diving and marine education, including work with a Seattle dive shop and a local independent middle school where he supported a travel study program and shared ocean science with students.

In 2016, James joined National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions as a dive buddy and gradually expanded his roles across the fleet, learning from teammates, guests and the diverse environments encountered on each voyage. As an Undersea Specialist, he helped guests engage more closely with the underwater world while supporting the company’s commitment to conservation and responsible exploration.

Now as an Expedition Leader, James focuses on fostering meaningful connections between guests and the places they visit. Whether guiding moments of discovery or coordinating expedition operations with the shipboard team, he works to create experiences grounded in care for both the landscapes and communities that make exploration possible.
