Today was our first landing in Svalbard. Early in the morning, we were already welcomed by the mountains of Spitzbergen, however, we had a ways to go before we could do our very first landing in the high Arctic. The morning was relaxing, and our very own Captain Martin gave a presentation about our beautiful vessel.

National Geographic Resolution made its first stop at Poolepynten. Even though there was cloud coverage, the day was beautiful, and all along the coastline we could see reindeers grazing. When we finally made it ashore, we had already been sailing for two days, so it’s likely that some enjoyed the feeling of stable, new land under their feet.

At Poolepynten, we were able to catch sight of a walrus haul out where dozens of walruses rested on the beach. Encountering them activated most of our senses, where we could see, hear, and even smell them.

After this beautiful and unique day, it’s time to continue our adventure onwards to explore Svalbard even further.
