Jesse Humbert

Jefferson (Jesse) Humbert is a National Geographic Certified Field Educator and Naturalist with a background in marine ecology and cephalopod research. He grew up near Mt. Hood in Oregon, where early experiences outdoors shaped his long-standing interest in the natural world.

Jesse began his undergraduate studies in Spain and Argentina before returning to the Pacific Northwest to complete his degrees. During this time, he worked as a cave diver in Mexico, mapping submerged cave systems and guiding visitors in the waters off Cancún, including reefs known for marine wildlife such as whale sharks. He also worked extensively as an outdoor educator and guide, leading whitewater rafting, mountaineering and climbing expeditions throughout Oregon and Washington.

After completing undergraduate research on the giant Pacific octopus, Jesse earned a master’s degree in Marine Biology, focusing on a small octopus species in Puget Sound. His work included developing an underwater camera system capable of tracking individual octopuses, contributing new insight into their behavior and ecology.

Jesse later pursued a joint Ph.D. in Marine Ecology. Today, much of his work centers on studying octopus behavior and marine ecosystems, including the kelp forests of Southern California. As a field educator and expedition team member, he enjoys helping guests better understand the complexity of ocean life through exploration and evidence-based interpretation.
