Itinerary

Day 1 - Copenhagen, Denmark / Helsingør (Elsinore)

Disembark the ship this morning and head north along the coast to Helsingør, also known as Elsinore. Founded in 1492 by the Danish King Eric of Pomerania, Helsingør has been at the center of Danish maritime and trade history for centuries. Walk through its storied streets, visit the striking Maritime Museum and explore the halls of the famed Kronborg Castle, which keeps a watchful eye over the sound of Øresund.

In the afternoon, return to the city and delve further into its storied past by visiting the Museum of Copenhagen. A marvelous introduction to the city, the museum tells the story of its Viking Age origins through to today. Continue touring the city on foot as you cross the impressive Marble Bridge and pass by the Royal Stables enroute to Christiansborg Castle. Once home to the Danish royal family, the palace now houses the Danish Parliament and Royal Reception Rooms, which you will visit with a local guide. After the tour, explore the rest of the castle, including the Knights Hall with its magnificent chandeliers and tapestries, at your leisure. This evening, enjoy dinner in historic surroundings. Day 2 - Roskilde

After breakfast, venture to nearby Roskilde—a must-see for those interested in history, architecture and Vikings. After an introduction to this intriguing city at the Roskilde Museum, enjoy a traditional Danish lunch of smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches). This afternoon, visit the impressive Roskilde Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site that was built in 1175 using more than three million bricks. Then take a guided tour of the Viking Ship Museum, located along the shores of the beautiful fjord. Listen to tales of Viking sea voyages and learn about the five Viking longboats that sank over a thousand years ago and were recovered by an underwater expedition in 1962. This evening, head back into the city and enjoy dinner on your own. (B,L)
