Scottish Highlands Post-Voyage Extension
Day 1 - Disembark Ship / Edinburgh, Scotland
Disembark the National Geographic Explorer in Edinburgh and walk directly over to another ship in the harbor: the magnificent Royal Yacht Britannia, the late Queen Elizabeth II’s former floating palace for over 40 years. Explore five of her decks, from the elegant State Apartments to the gleaming Engine Room. After lunch at our hotel, choose to enjoy the afternoon at leisure, or join an optional visit to the National Museum of Scotland. This evening, you’ll have a chance to stroll the Royal Mile, visit St. Giles Cathedral, and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant. Stay overnight at the Apex Grassmarket hotel (or similar). (B,L,D)
Day 2 - Edinburgh
Today offers a more in-depth visit of the Royal Mile, finishing at the stunning Edinburgh Castle—perched on an extinct volcano overlooking the city and part of Edinburgh’s designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Explore the castle’s hallowed halls, learn about its history dating back to the 12th century, and marvel at the Crown Jewels. After lunch at a local restaurant, take part in a Scottish whisky tasting. Dinner is included at the hotel this evening. (B,L,D)
Day 3 - Scottish Highlands
Travel to Stirling this morning, the original capital of Scotland. Known for Stirling Castle—set on a spectacular perch overlooking the River Forth—this fortress has controlled one of the main routes between the Lowlands and Scottish Highlands for centuries. Immerse yourself in the old town of Stirling, walk in the steps of Mary, Queen of Scots; William Wallace; and Robert the Bruce, and visit the castle itself. Enjoy lunch in the old town between visits. This afternoon, continue through the country’s rugged scenery as you enter the Highlands. Our hotel, the Bridge of Orchy Hotel, is located along the West Highland Way: a long-distance hiking trail through the Highlands. Before dinner at the hotel, enjoy a stroll along the river during your free time. (B,L,D)
Day 4 - Scottish Highlands
Continue through the Highlands to Glencoe Visitors Centre, where the history of Scottish Highlands clans—including that of Clan MacDonald, who fought for their lands against the Jacobite rulers—come alive. Stop briefly to witness the engineering marvel of Neptune’s Staircase, the entrance to the Caledonian Canal, before continuing along Loch Ness to Urquhart Castle. Upon arrival to Inverness, head to the Culloden Heritage Center and historic battlefield, where the last battle fought on British soil took place. Its desolate fields have barely changed over 250 years. This evening, enjoy a farewell dinner at the Kingsmills Hotel (or similar) with fellow travelers. (B,L,D)
