We started the day in the lovely town of Runde, Norway, where the first group went to the science center, Runde Miljosenter. The guests were provided with both a presentation from one of the scientists about the function of the institute that conducts ecological survey and research, as well as a thorough tour that covered both the natural and local history, especially about the sunken treasure from a Dutch East Indian Company trade vessel. Despite the slightly soggy weather, the strenuous hikers trekked a scenic trail that took them to a vantage point overlooking the breathtaking coast of Norway at the edge of Runde, including a view of a bird colony. The art center offered a variety of paintings to enjoy, and the exhibition included the works of a famous Norwegian named Elling Reitan. The day concluded in Runde as a local band gave a joyous performance in front of National Geographic Endurance as we departed to continue our journey northward through Norway.
This morning, we woke to stunning views of glassy calm waters of Innvikfjorden, surrounded by towering, snowcapped mountains. Our guests had a choice of either visiting the spectacular Jostedal Glacier, the largest glacier in continental Europe, or to take a boat cruise off Kjenndalsanden. In the afternoon, everyone had the opportunity to take the cable car in Loen to the top of the mountain, and we were awarded with absolutely stunning vistas across the tops of the mountains and deep in the fjords. It was a fantastic day to end a truly incredible voyage exploring Svalbard and the picturesque coast of Norway.
What a beautiful start to our journey through the Norwegian Fjords, toward Arctic Svalbard! Today, we visited the charming town of Loen in Nordfjorden, surrounded by towering mountains and deep blue waters. Some of us chose to take the scenic 3-mile hike up to the Briksdal Glacier, one of the most well-known and accessible arms of the Jostedal Glacier. The trail was peaceful and full of stunning views, with waterfalls cascading down the cliffs along the way. Others enjoyed a relaxing boat ride followed by a short hike to visit a smaller glacier, soaking in the quiet beauty of the landscape. In the afternoon, we rode one of the steepest cable cars in the world, climbing 3,000 feet up a cliff overlooking the Nordfjord. The views from the top were absolutely breathtaking, with snow-capped peaks, glacial valleys, and the shimmering fjord below. It was the perfect way to end a day full of fresh air, adventure, and unforgettable scenery.
With calm seas and clear skies, National Geographic Resolution cruised into Hjorunfjorden. The local boat, Nordic Lady , came to pick up our guests to take them on adventures ashore. There were great hikes and the chance to explore the peaceful town. After lunch, we cruised south in search of Ulsteinvik, the birthplace of National Geographic Resolution . The ship nosed into the shipyard where it was built. We loved seeing where it all began for our magnificent ship. As the day came to an end, everyone enjoyed another delicious dinner. What a day!
